Color and Image

Updated: Jan 26, 2018

I absolutely love color theory and color psychology so I am very excited to know all about that and how I can use these in my designs moving forward.

Page 68 begins the chapter with a lovely diagram, explaining colors and how they relate to culture. I thought this aspect to be very interesting since some cultures have one single name to represent all light colors and a separate color to represent all dark hued colors. The beginning of the Chapter explains how colors have a very powerful and dramatic experience on the viewer in diagrams and imagery.

“ Color is the place where our brain and the universe meet .” -Paul Klee

As you continue to read into the chapter, Color for different outlets is explained. For example, Web Colors or colors for the web "are often expressed in Hexadecimal values." what this means is that a color will have two numbers and letters associated with its hue, this makes easy for computer and digital systems to translate the colors directly into a binary system.

Using Color systems can be very crucial and detrimental to the making or collapse of a design especially when it comes to choosing complimentary colors and neutral colors. The book talks about Adjacent colors briefly and how they can appear to be the same color if they are placed together or surrounded by other colors.

In Addition, One of my other favorite parts of this chapter was toward the end where the chapter began to talk about  Encoding and Decoding colors and meaning along with meaning of text surrounded by color. The example in the book is very dynamic as it shows the definition that the absence of color can make. The image with the car becomes much more obvious of it's complexity when the image is shown in black and white right next to the wavy lines on page 78. The chapter continues from this point to talk about how to prepare images with text for commercial use, it talks about dimensions as it also mentions image preparation for the web. The chapter soon wraps up itself by showing the viewer that color matter just as much as how you present it.
