Glow Project

After much review in class on Tuesday I have decided to change the direction of my project once again. I feel as though I have finally grasped the concept of the project. At first I was going about the assignment the wrong way in my mind but now I think I have found the right solution.

I notice that I personally collect many objects and this is of course unintentional, but I do have a lot of little nick knacks. I have decided to put these little treasures to good work.

For this Project I want to take some of the objects that I have collected and cast shadows of the objects. Whatever I see in the shadow cast I then have decided to add an element of illustration to each shadow. What I did was draw a character or scene around the shadow, thus allowing the shadow to become part of the piece itself.

"Scissor Head" Shadow with Highlighter

When I first began setting the objects up I realized that the regular yellow light was not projecting the type of dramatic shadow that I had imagined in my head. What I then decided to do was take a black light and cast the shadows. The black light made it even more difficult to see the illustrations that were going over the shadow. I then decided that maybe a sharpie pen would have a more dramatic effect but all those efforts just became lost on the page. I thought maybe this idea just wasn't going to work and that I would have to try back again in the morning with natural sunlight.

I wasn't going to give up that easily just yet. Fortunately as I was looking around my room for the next object that I would try to cast and the lamp that had the black light bulb in it had fallen over and just so happened to cast a light on the highlighters that I had on my desk. The Highlighters were glowing up so bright I had to try and illustrate with them. This is when I found the perfect way to continue to go about the project. The first imagery I was able to create was the scissors I own that sit in a coffee mug on my desk. The Scissors aren't alone they are accompanied by some pens and pencils but the way the light hit this object you can only see the figure that they make.

At first I was just drawing on note book paper with the Highlighter but I thought the blue lines of the notebook paper were just too distracting with the bluish black light. So that was when I made the decision to use 4 x 6 in cuts of water color paper.

Each image exist as its own illustration drawing but once the lights are turned off the images create an entirely new message.
