Practice and Patience

For this particular project my classmates and I had to choose one page from a newspaper or a magazine that contains a lot of text. Then, using a photocopier or a scanner, we had to make a few copies of the page, reduced or enlarged to various sizes. The next step of the project was to choose one letter in the alphabet. I choose the letter 's' mainly because my last name is Sutton and for my Graphic Design VI course we are working on personal branding. I thought that If I did something really cool with the letter I could potentially re-purpose the design for my personal brand.

The Next step was to find one of these letters in the page I've copied and use my X- Acto knife to cut it out and tape it down somewhere on the paper. I decided to us tape as my choice of adhesive because I realized as I started cutting the 'S' letter was so small. I had the most difficulty in trying to get the pieces to stick to the page.

The first few letters that I was able to put down.

I decided to choose the metaphor surrounding the "perfect imperfections of love". The curvature of the letter 'S' allows for some of the groups of the letter to create waves that imply motion or the constant flow of affection. By the placement alone you are able to see that some of the X-height of the letters are different and their line weight is varied as well, which helps to imply the idea of disjointed characters that still operate collectively. As I continued to put more pieces down one by one I started to realize that I stopped consciously thinking about if I wanted to create rhythms or noise and I started to just place them freely, which also related back to my metaphor about perfect imperfections.

There is no right or wrong way to love, so long as you give it all you got and never give up.
